Woodcrest Villa Dedicates Library
Margaret Derstine Honored for Contributions

Woodcrest Villa held a dedication ceremony on Wednesday afternoon, March 23, to name the Hummingbird Library in honor of long-time resident Margaret Derstine. The library was officially renamed The Margaret Derstine Library. Ms. Derstine has volunteered thousands of hours to the growth and maintenance of the libraries at Woodcrest Villa and Mennonite Home starting two years after moving to Woodcrest Villa in 1994.

As a former librarian and teacher at Locust Grove Mennonite School, Ms. Derstine has always brought a special flair to the task, ensuring that the library displays are attractive and that the more than 4,000 volumes contain a variety of topics and genres to interest everyone. Some of her biggest accomplishments at Woodcrest Villa include growing the library from 1,000 volumes to more than 4,000 and also using the Dewey Decimal System to catalog every book, which she documents electronically. Residents and staff members can check out books for a 3-week period. All of the books are donated and thanks to the generosity of residents, the selection includes a wonderful selection of some of the newest best sellers around. In addition to helping guide the library growth at Woodcrest Villa, Ms. Derstine has also been instrumental in the design and maintenance of the library at Mennonite Home.

Ms. Derstine enjoys reading as much as she enjoys maintaining the library. Some of her recent favorites include “I Am Potential: Eight Lessons on Living, Loving, and Reaching Your Dreams” by Patrick Henry Hughes and “Stones into Schools: Promoting Peace with Books, Not Bombs, in Afghanistan and Pakistan” by Greg Mortenson.

Woodcrest Villa is the residential living campus of Mennonite Home Communities and is located at 2001 Harrisburg Pike Lancaster.
