VISION & HISTORY
MORAVIAN MANOR'S LATER YEARS

1973
After years of planning, ground was broken for the construction of Moravian Manor on Sunday, May 13. Realizing that the expertise of a licensed nursing home administrator was imperative, the Board implemented a thorough personnel search. Burr W. Beard accepted the position and assumed the post October 1.

1974
After several months of construction and prior to the official opening of Moravian Manor, the first two cottages–#117 and 116–were completed and occupied. Between 1975 and 1979, 14 additional cottages were built along Moravian Avenue.

1975
On January 3, Moravian Manor–built at a cost of $2.25 million–opened its doors to five residents who occupied the first rooms in the residential wings. On February 18, the nursing wing opened and admitted its first resident.

1980
After five years as administrator, Burr W. Beard decided to retire and tendered his resignation in December 1979. On May 1, Nancy H. O’Hara was named administrator.

1981
Under the visionary leadership of administrator Nancy H. O’Hara, the Manor began considering the addition of independent living apartments to the Manor’s campus.

1983-1984
Between these two years, 26 apartments in four separate buildings (Manor Greene) were constructed.

1985-1986
In response to the ever-changing marketplace and needs of an aging society, the demand for assisted living became evident. Moravian Manor responded to the market and added 38-personal care beds. The new personal care wing was opened on July 27, 1986. In accordance with its long-range strategic plan, Moravian Manor announced plans to add a chapel/community center to its campus

1988
While Steinman Hall was built, ongoing interior renovations and repairs necessitated by an aging building were made so that the Manor could remain competitive.

Moravian Manor became one of the first 20 retirement communities in America to be accredited by the Continuing Care Accreditation Commission (CCAC) of the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA).

1989
Steinman Hall was dedicated on April 30, serving as a prominent building and a center for both Manor and community activities.

1995
In January, Rev. Franklin H. Schock was named Executive Director following the retirement of Nancy H. O’Hara. Soon after assuming leadership, Rev. Schock launched a long-range strategic planning program that involved trustee, management and resident input to determine the Manor’s future direction.

2000
On January 3, Moravian Manor celebrated its 25th anniversary. On September 23, a groundbreaking ceremony was held to launch a major expansion and renovation project to add new independent living apartments, enhance facilities for the west wing assisted living center and renovate the Health Center.

2003
In November, a grand opening celebration was held to officially open the new Garden Court Apartments and mark the completion of the expansion and renovation project.

2005
Moravian Manor celebrates its 30th anniversary. Special events are planned throughout the year to commemorate the milestone.

Building Moravian Manor
The foundation for Moravian Manor was established in the 1950s through the early works of the Moravian Church to care for its aging members. In the early 1970s, the Lititz Moravian Church donated 22 acres in town to construct the retirement community. The Manor welcomed its first residents to the Moravian Avenue Cottages in late 1974 and to Manor West Assisted Living (formerly called the residential wing) in January 1975.

Throughout the years, we've experienced growth with numerous expansions, renovations, and enhanced facilities to provide increased services to our residents. Looking to the future, we remain dedicated to the continual improvement of accommodations and services that we offer to our residents and the local community.

Moravian Manor is nearing completion of our new Health Center addition.
We expect that both floors of the new addition will be ready for final inspections in April, and move-in sometime during mid May. Once final approvals are received and moving completed, the renovations in the existing vacated Health Center areas will begin and run through late November 2009. Improvements in the new addition that will provide immediate enjoyment include:

  • Enlarged rehab and therapeutic recreation departments within easy access to Health Center residents.
  • Comfortable and attractive living and dining spaces for each new Health Center “household”.
  • More private room accommodations, many with private, full baths.
  • A new styling salon in close proximity to Health Center residents.
  • New outdoor area for residents in view of an enlarged outdoor play area for the on-site child care center.
The official open house for the new spaces will be held during the week of Oct. 29—after all renovations are completed, residents moving to the new addition, their families, and staff will be able to enjoy the newly added spaces very soon!
